In other words, their biological age doesn’t match their chronological age.

In fact, you could see two children of the same chronological age differing by up to six years in biological age. The child who matures earlier will be bigger, faster, and stronger than their late-maturing peer, and therefore more likely to be dominant at their sport. This often leads to late maturers getting left behind when it comes to picking teams. Research in English Rugby Union Academies has displayed a clear preference towards early maturers (Howard et al., 2016). This selection bias has a huge impact, with fewer late maturers making it through the system the organisation is potentially missing out on a lot of talent.

Another area where understanding a child’s growth and maturation is important is for injury prevention. As when a child goes through their growth spurt they can be more susceptible to injuries as their bones and muscles go through rapid phases of growth.

Growth and maturation monitoring involves a combination of anthropometric measurements and statistical models to predict an athlete’s adult height, estimate where they are in terms of their growth and physical maturity, and whether they’re an early, on-time, or late developer.

This can then be compared with the athlete’s current height to see where the athlete is in relation to their future growth potential.

Peak Height Velocity (PHV) refers to the period during which adolescents experience their fastest growth spurt.   • Predicted Adult Height can identify an athlete with the potential to be physically dominant in later years.
  • Maturity Timing can help identify technically and tactically gifted athletes who may just need to be grouped with other athletes of similar maturity in order for them to flourish.
  • Peak Height Velocity can identify athletes that may be going through their growth spurt which can explain a temporary drop-off in performance.

This approach ensures a broader pool of athletes is considered, focusing on long-term potential rather than immediate performance.

Bio-banding is an innovative approach designed to overcome biases. Bio-banding groups athletes based on their biological age rather than chronological age. This method levels the playing field, allowing late maturers to compete against peers of similar maturity, fostering fair competition and development opportunities. Using growth and maturation data, coaches can deliver tailored training programs that align with an athlete’s growth and maturation stage to enhance skill acquisition and physical development. This personalized approach maximizes the athlete’s development throughout their maturation helping them to reach their full potential.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to injuries during periods of rapid growth (Malina et al., 2019). Monitoring growth and maturation allows coaches to identify these periods of rapid growth and to use these insights to adjust training loads and implement injury prevention strategies. As a result, the likelihood of overuse injuries is significantly reduced.

Embracing growth and maturation monitoring is not just a strategic advantage for organisations but a transformative approach that benefits both athletes and the institutions that support them. For athletes, it means being grouped appropriately with athletes of similar physical maturity, and receiving personalised training that respects their unique developmental timeline.
